National Trails Day Report: Pekin Community Saddle Club met at Deam Lake on May 30th at 10:00am to work on getting the new trail cleared and ready for mapping, GPS, and the archeologist to inspect. We had 10 members that showed up to work with chain saws, golf carts, 1 skid loader with a good “but crazy driver” and food for lunch. ITRA provided lunch for the day. It was a nice day and we were very lucky that a storm was just over the hill so to speak and it missed the campground as we were finishing up. The next weekend we worked on another section of the trail for about 5 hours to finish up what Walt wanted done.
Pekin Saddle Club works very hard to get trees cleared off of the trails surrounding the club and at the Deam Lake area. Daniel Boone Distance Riders have always cleared these trails as well; they clear them all the way over to Clark State Forest Campground. Last year during the hurricane wind damage and this year’s ice storm both DBDR and PSC worked together to get the trails cleaned up and usable. This worked out very well with no double tracking to see what had already been done. Connie Caudill of DBDR and I talked every few days to keep everyone in the loop as to what had been done. A special thanks to PSC and DBDR for doing a good job.
DeamLake News: I talked to Walt Zak last week and he said I could pass this information along. The wiring has been done on three more horse barns. This means that some more “Non-Horse Lake Sites” will be available as soon as the reservation system has been updated with these sites. This leaves one horse barn not ready for use due to no stall fronts on it yet. The new trail that members of Pekin Community Saddle Club has been marking and clearing since February has been mapped out with GPS and is waiting on the archeological clearance and then the hard surface will be put down before it can be opened for use. This addition will create a 5.8 mile continuous loop (Yellow Trail) around the campground and the lake. This trail will be called a beginner loop. It is very much needed and appreciated.
